Contact smart card reader

A contact smart card reader is a device designed to read and interact with contact smart cards. Contact chip cards are cards that contain an embedded microprocessor and memory, enabling secure data exchange, storage, and processing. This type of chip card is commonly used for authentication and identification purposes. In Croatia, the best example of smart chip card usage is the new eID (eOI) electronic identity card.A contact smart card reader typically consists of hardware and software components that enable communication with smart cards. The hardware component includes a slot or interface into which the chip card is inserted, allowing the reader to establish a connection with the card’s embedded microprocessor. The software component includes the necessary drivers to facilitate communication between the reader and the card.A contact smart card reader can be built into a computer, integrated into another device or system, but it is most commonly used as a peripheral device connected to a computer via a USB port.

Contactless RFID card reader
Contactless RFID card readers are a type of RFID reader designed to interact with RFID cards. RFID cards contain an embedded RFID chip and an antenna that enable wireless communication with RFID readers. When an RFID card comes close to an RFID reader, the reader emits radio waves that power the chip card and enable data exchange. We offer readers for all popular RFID operating frequencies (125 kHz, 13.56 MHz, 860–960 MHz, etc.). An example of RFID reader usage is reading data from EM4100 and EM4200 chip cards that operate at 125 kHz. This type of chip is most commonly used for identification cards and access control. In the 13.56 MHz frequency range, the most popular chip implementations on the market are the well-known MIFARE chips, while in the UHF range, chip technologies for contactless toll collection (ENC systems) and vehicle identification cards (for example, payment and access to private parking lots) prevail. All chips in the UHF range fall under the ISO 18000-6C standard for RFID UHF communication. Most readers, regardless of operating frequency, connect to a computer via a USB interface.

Contactless NFC card reader
A contactless NFC card reader is a device specifically designed to interact with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology in the 13.56 MHz frequency range. NFC card readers are used to communicate with cards, wristbands, key fobs, stickers, mobile phones, and other devices that contain NFC chips. They come in various forms, including USB devices for connecting to personal computers, integrated modules for installation in different systems or objects, and readers built into mobile devices. The most popular contactless MIFARE chips, used in various applications, are compatible with NFC technology. These readers facilitate the exchange of data and information between the reader and an NFC-enabled object. NFC card readers connect to a computer via a USB interface and can use various software applications for data processing. Communication between two NFC devices is typically bidirectional and very short-range, only a few centimeters. It takes place via induction, where one device creates a magnetic field that powers the other (if the other is passive, such as a sticker), or both devices actively communicate.

Magnetic card reader
A magnetic card reader, also known as a magnetic stripe reader (magstripe reader), is a device used to read and write information encoded on the magnetic stripe of various types of cards such as credit cards, debit cards, identification cards, access cards, gift cards, and other card types depending on the application. The magnetic stripe is a strip made of magnetic material, most commonly attached to the back of the card. A magnetic stripe reader reads data stored on high-coercivity (HiCo) and/or low-coercivity (LoCo) magnetic stripes. Depending on how it is used, there are two types of magnetic stripe readers: swipe (the card is swiped through the reader) and insert (the card is quickly inserted into the reader and then removed). It should be noted that as technology advances, the magnetic stripe is becoming somewhat obsolete and less secure compared to newer technologies that provide better security and protection against fraud, unauthorized copying, and counterfeiting. Accordingly, the overall need for magnetic card readers is declining.
