Chip

A smart card with a chip, also known as an Integrated Circuit Card (ICC), is a type of card that contains an embedded memory or microprocessor chip. This microchip can store and process data, enabling the card to perform various functions and interact with systems or devices. Smart cards with chips are used for a wide range of applications, including identification, authentication, payment, access control, and more.

The use of chip technology in smart cards enhances security and enables more sophisticated functionality compared to traditional magnetic stripe cards. It allows for encryption, authentication, and dynamic data generation, making these cards more resistant to fraud and unauthorized access.

There are several types of smart chip cards, each with its own capabilities and use cases:

Contact smart cards

These cards have a metal contact plate on the surface that must physically touch a card reader to establish communication. Contact smart cards are typically used in applications such as identity cards, SIM cards for mobile phones, and some payment cards.

Smart cards with dual interfaces

These cards combine both contact and contactless technologies for communication with the same chip. They have both a contact chip and a built-in antenna for contactless communication. This allows the card to operate in a broader range of scenarios, supporting both traditional contact interactions and contactless interactions.

Hybrid cards

Hybrid cards contain two chips, one connected to the contact plate and the other to the contactless antenna. They are most commonly used for two different applications, such as contact for logical access to computers and contactless for physical access control to rooms in some organizations.

EMV payment cards

EMV (Europay-MasterCard-Visa) cards are a special type of chip smart cards used for payment card transactions. They contain a microchip that generates a unique code for each transaction, making them more secure than traditional magnetic stripe cards and nearly impossible to counterfeit. EMV is an international standard that ensures the integrity of transactions and enables interoperability across different payment acceptance points for in-person payments through EFTPOS terminals (known as card-present transactions), cash withdrawals at ATMs, or online payments in internet stores (known as card-not-present transactions).

Electronic personal documents

Many countries use smart cards with chips for secure identification, digital signatures, and storage of personal documents, including corresponding personal certificates and cryptographic keys, such as electronic passports (e-passports), electronic identity cards (e-ID cards), and driver’s licenses. These cards also securely (encrypted) store biometric data and other personal information, and they are based on PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) technology. This category also includes health cards, which, in addition to identification, can be used to store medical records, insurance data, and other health-related information.
